Fools for Haitian Aid? Rich Pounce (Again) Amidst the Financial Ruins & How We Got Here

I think (forgive me, but I am a pretty huge skeptic) you'd have to be a fool to give money to a charity with which George W. Bush is associated (let alone heads). I keep thinking "So they still have no clue as to whether people will continue giving to something with that picture as its calling card?" And look at those faces of empathy. Breaks your heart don't they? Mark Crispin Miller has a good idea about how to bring real help to the people of Haiti. Driftglass offers several others. I like Care, Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF, where 99% of what you give goes directly to the needy. Naomi Klein has a few words of warning for us:

Those rat bastards at the Heritage Foundation are already pushing their pro-american-corporationist agenda on Haiti.
And who woulda thunk that the richies would be picking up deals (again) at bargain prices? Not Rupert, of course. Although who can believe any of this loose talk? It's undoubtedly just the jumping off point of making some really big money.

The Saudi billionaire whose investment firm is one of the biggest stakeholders in Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. said he is looking to expand his alliances with the media giant, in the latest indication that his appetite for growth remains robust even as his company retrenches. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a nephew of the Saudi king and who was listed last year by Forbes as the world's 22nd richest person, met with News Corp.'s chief executive Rupert Murdoch on Jan. 14 in a meeting that "touched upon future potential alliances with News Corp.," according to a statement released by his Kingdom Holding Co. late Saturday.

Media reports have indicated that News Corp., parent to Fox News and Dow Jones & Co., among others, may be thinking of buying a stake in Alwaleed's Rotana Media Group, which includes a number of satellite channels that air in the Middle East.

Grandpa Eddie has some insight into exactly what type of mess we've allowed to grow up around us due to our ignorance of history.

Sunday, January 17, 2010 BACK TO THE DARK AGES

"We have become a nation of fools being ruled by idiots controlled by corporate jackasses." . . . The rich get richer, and the poor keep getting poorer. The religious elite, and corporate America, have a stranglehold on our country and it's elected officials. Everything now is designed to enrich the wealthy and step on the throats of the working poor, and by working poor I mean the 80% of us who don't have any of the wealth.

I found this article in TPJmagazine. The original date it was printed was December 27, 2009. This shows how we are on the path to a return to the Dark Ages and if we don't do something soon, that's just where we will be.

THE REINCARNATION OF THE DARK AGES

None Dare Call It RELIGIOUS FEUDALISM

Go read the rest and watch the video. For your own best defense. Suzan ______________________

I'm still shaking my head. Clinton I can understand. Bush I I could understand...with a stretch. But Bush II? I just have to hope it's really just a way of allowing him the chance to redeem himself. I doubt he is capable of that, though.

article in the guardian (UK): Cruise ships still find a Haitian berth - Luxury liners are still docking at private beaches near Haiti's devastated earthquake zone for holidaymakers to enjoy the water...

I don't think he is redeemable, Beekeepers Apprentice. I'm sure there's money attached to his presence (just like his Dad was paid $2 million by China after he left the Presidency for his efforts on their behalf (still flowering everyday)).

Thanks for the timely reminder, RJ, of exactly who these richies really are. I'm guessing they had their cameras at the ready in order to catch any "newsworthy" shots. What a group of fine people we have to look up to. For a little while longer anyway.

Again, thanks everyone for your time and comments.

now what are we up to? Who will lead Haiti's security? - There appear to be some rising tensions between countries leading the relief efforts in Haiti. We know the US is sending in upwards of 10,000 troops to the country. But since 2004, Brazil’s military has been the commanding force leading the Haiti UN peacekeeping mission, technically referred to as MINUSTAH. Brazil has about 1,700 soldiers in Haiti and commands about another 5,300 UN forces in Haiti. Nelson Jobim, Brazil’s defence minister just came back from Haiti and made a point of that saying Brazil would not voluntarily relinquish any of its command duties. Essentially, what he was saying was that Brazil, not the Pentagon, would continue to lead the UN forces. When pressed, Jobim also admitted that the US military doesn’t take orders from foreign forces.
So who will answer to whom in Haiti? There could be a brewing operational command power struggle. I don’t see Brazil backing down. They have long considered Haiti a critical part of their foreign policy, and aren’t going to bow easily to the US military when it comes to commanding forces in Haiti during these critical times.

Maybe they've decided to use it as a base for attacking Chavez/Venezuela/et al.

Chavez' latest speech sounded ominous to me.

Thanks for your comments everyone!
